Uber helicopter rides from Manhattan to JFK were ‘a third CHEAPER than Uber Black rides from the city to the airport’ during a brief fire sale

  • Riders coming from Manhattan were actually able to take the eight-minute trip for $108.98, which was said to be a third lower than the Uber Black ride of $163.11
  • The ride was more expensive than a standard UberX car which costs $100.35
  • Matt Wing, an Uber spokesman, shared that ‘a small, random set of riders’ were given the promotion
  • Flights to and from lower Manhattan began on October 7 and cost between $200 and $225 per person

A special promotion offered by Uber to ‘a small, random set of riders’ gave loyal customers the chance to take a helicopter ride to JFK that was cheaper than an Uber Black ride.

Riders coming from Manhattan were able to take the eight-minute trip for $108.98, which was said to be a third lower than the Uber Black ride of $163.11.

The ride was more expensive than a standard UberX car which costs $100.35, Bloomberg reports.

Although Uber claimed the service is intended to reduce travel time, when Reuters took a trip from its Midtown office to the airport it took 70 minutes, including a subway ride downtown and two Uber rides to and from the heliport — similar to the travel time of taking regular taxi in moderate traffic.

Uber Copter was first released in June to platinum and Diamond members, which are customers who have spent more than $2,500 on Uber Pool or Uber Eats, or $833 or Uber X.

The vehicle seats five people, who are able to bring a hand luggage and handbag or laptop case.

JFK is one of the country’s largest airports and car trips from congested Manhattan can take anywhere from one to two hours, while public transit takes between 50 and 75 minutes.
