Radio host Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli has shared a hilarious untold story about Barry Humphries pranking punters at a notorious boozer by pretending he was blind.
He told his co-host Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald the funny anecdote about the beloved comedian during Nova FM’s breakfast show earlier this week.
‘This story about Barry Humphries is just one of the greats,’ Wippa began.
He said the comedian, best known for his alter ego Dame Edna Everage, had met his friend Jim for a drink in a pub in Eltham, northeast of Melbourne.
‘So the story goes that it was during the 60s, and Barry was very theatrical back then. He had a hat, he wore sunglasses, with long hair and a long coat,’ he said.
The pair had met up in Eltham, which back then was considered a ‘rough’ area where the majority of men worked long hours on the railway.
On entering the boozer, Jim suddenly got cold feet – knowing Barry would be torn apart by the locals, who had likely been drinking all afternoon.
He told the comedian they’d better leave, but Humphries had none of it.He confidently walked to the bar and ordered two beers.

‘Jim told him, we’re having one drink. One drink and then we’re out of here because these guys have probably been on the booze all arvo,’ Wippa continued.
The men finished their beers, and Jim said it was time to go. As he got up to leave, Humphries turned to the barman and said: ‘Two more beers please’.
Jim warned the comedian they could get into ‘all sorts of trouble’ after noticing some men staring pointedly in their direction.
‘All of a sudden, some of the blokes start arking up and yelling a couple of things. Jim says they should go, but Humphries tells him, ‘no let’s stay and enjoy our beers’.
After finishing the beer, Jim grabs the comedian by the arm and makes to leave.
But again, despite his protestations, Humphries orders two more beers.
On entering the boozer Jim, a friend of Himphries’, suddenly got cold feet – knowing Barry would be torn apart by the tough locals, who wore high-vis and were covered in grease

‘All of a sudden, Jim looks over, and these blokes, grease on the face, grease on the hands, 10 foot tall and strong as anything, are walking over,’ Wippa says.
Jim watched as one of the men walked over to the table and tapped Humphries on the shoulder, telling him: ‘Are you some kind of f***ing freak?’
‘Barry Humphries turns around and pretends to be blind,’ Wippa revealed.
The comedian, whose eyes were covered by sunglasses, began to feel over the man’s face and shoulders while asking Jim for help.
‘Jim, Jim, say something. Are these men okay? What’s happened? You must help,’ Wippa says while impersonating Humphries with his hands in the air.

The man apologised profusely, and offered to buy the men a drink for his mistake. Humphries continues the gag, asking Jim to put his beer where he can reach it.
The pair drank a few beers with the man before deciding to leave. At the door, Humphries asks Jim where the men are standing so he can wave goodbye.
‘He then takes off his sunglasses and tells the men to get f’d,’ Wippa revealed.

‘He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,’ his family said in a statement.
The beloved comedian spent over 70 years on the stage and was ‘an entertainer to his core’ who loved his audiences and never took them for granted.
