Unusual ingredient nutritionist swears by for glowing skin

Using natural ingredients to promote radiant and healthy skin isn’t new, but there are some that come more highly rated than others.

Australian nutritionist Jessica Sepel’s radiant visage stands as a testament to healthy living – based on a holistic approach to nutrition and how she cares for her skin.

In a recent blog post, the best-selling health book author revealed how she takes care of her skin in a variety of ways.

She also revealed that she relies on one kitchen ingredient in particular – coriander – to keep her complexion glowing.

She wrote: ‘When it comes to skin care, I try and keep it as simple and natural as possible.’

The nutritionist said she swears by the power of fresh herbs and spices, which she adds to all of her meals.

‘Coriander and parsley are so cleansing for the body and amazing for the skin!,’ she said.

Ms Sepel also shared how she’s a fan of home remedies for dealing with problematic skin.

She declared apple cider vinegar as her go-to product for dealing with spots and pimples, and writing of the product: ‘This actually works’.

‘I dab apple cider vinegar onto cotton wool and dab the pimple with it and watch it go down,’ she explained.

While we live in an age of collagen-infused sheet masks that promise perfect line-free skin, the nutritionist is fond of whipping up a nutrient-rich mask that is perfect for penetrating the skin.

Her DIY mask consists of easy ingredients you’ve probably got on-hand in your kitchen: yoghurt, oats and lemons.

‘Just mix 2 tbsp oats, 2 tbsp natural yoghurt, 1/2 lemon (juiced) and 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar,’ she said.

‘Add a splash or two of water. Mix in bowl. Add onto skin for 15 mins and then rinse.’

In the event you’re looking for a quick way to tighten and brighten skin, Ms Sepel suggested mashed strawberries, a trick she said her great-grandmother taught her.

‘Strawberries are high in Vitamin C which is amazing to boost skin collagen.’

She also credits using Trilogy products, namely the brand’s pure plant body oil, and firming body lotion as being key for reducing stretch marks and cellulite.

The health advocate, who firmly believes there’s a strong connection between our skin and what’s happening inside the body, previously shared her best tips for staying hydrated.

She wrote: ‘Your gut and liver are the most important organs to nourish for good skin.

Her number one recommendation to nourish her skin in the simplest way possible is to drink lots of filtered water –  with the added juice of a lemon or a splash of apple cider vinegar.

Not only does this have an effect on the liver and the gut, she said, but ‘will end up having a big effect on the skin’.

Incorporating nutrition into her routine, Ms Sepel advised eating good fats with every meal, including avocado, nuts, seeds, tahini, olive oil – all of which promote skin cell growth.

Her other suggestions are to avoid all refined sugars, and to only use natural sugars sparingly, and to avoid gluten as it can inflame the gut.

While Ms Sepel relies on a combination of nutrition and natural remedies, she also shared some of the supplements she takes for glowing skin.

‘I take skin-loving supplements like zinc (helps to repair skin cells), fish oil/flaxseed oil (essential fatty acids are essential for the skin) and probiotics,’ she said.

She added: ‘[They’re] amazing for gut health which will automatically help your skin’.
