A popular pasta sauce has been urgently recalled from supermarket shelves over fears the jars may be contaminated with shards of glass.

Food safety watchdogs stuck a ‘do not eat’ alert on Organic Alla Norma Sauce—made with aubergines, tomato and garlic.

It is feared the product, sold in retailers including high-end online supermarket Ocado, ‘may contain pieces of glass’.

Manufacturer Organico said the recall only affected one batch of the product with the batch number 140227 and best before date of February 14, 2027.

The retailer added: ‘Please do not consume. Return to the retailer for a refund.

‘If the retailer does not accept returns, please contact us for a refund.

‘We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.’

But Organico did not detail exactly how the shards of glass made its way into the product.

British safety regulator, The Food Standards Agency (FSA), which issued the alert, also said: ‘Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product.

‘These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

‘If you have bought any of the above product do not eat it,’ the agency added.

‘Instead, return it to the retailer it was purchased from for a refund.’

The FSA issues recalls when problems are spotted with food that means it should not be sold.

The recall comes just days after Morrisons recalled one of its own-brand sausages over plastic contamination fears.

The supermarket’s 400g ‘Best 6 Thick Cumberland Sausages’ with a best before date of May 1, may contain small pieces of plastic, the FSA said.

Last month, a similar alert was also issued over Iceland’s Vegetable Lasagne.

Customers were advised to return the ready meal — with the best before dates 23 July 2026 and 30 July 2026 — due to potential presence of ‘hard pieces of plastic’.
