Urgent investigation underway after reports a child was left inside a car in a shopping centre carpark

Concerned shoppers have reported seeing a child left locked in a car in a shopping centre carpark – with a police investigation now underway.

Photos of the child inside the black Mitsubishi 4WD at the Sunnyside Shopping Mall in Murwillumbah, in northern NSW, were posted to local social media groups at about 5pm on Monday.

The photo appears to show the child in a booster chair in the car’s back seat.

NSW Police have confirmed it is investigating the matter and requested anyone with information to come forward.

The vehicle had left the carpark by the time officers arrived but it’s understood police are tracking down the owner of the car.

Temperatures reached up to 24C in Murwillumbah on Monday.

It is illegal in the state to leave a child under the age of seven in a vehicle unattended if it poses a risk to their safety or likely to cause distress.

More to come.
