An urgent search is underway for a father and son who its suspected were swept off rocks at at a popular fishing spot.

The 47-year-old man and his 17-year-old son were last seen at about 5.30pm on Monday evening after travelling to Storm Bay, south of the Kiama Blowhole on the NSW south coast, at 5pm on Monday.

They had travelled from Liverpool to the well known fishing spot and were due home at midnight. 

The pair’s car was found along with fishing gear and their belongings on a rock ledge.

‘We’ve got grave concerns for their safety,’ NSW Police Superintendent Craig Ireland said in a statement to the Illawarra Mercury.

‘Today, conditions are fairly rough,’ Supt Ireland said. 

The search involves officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District, Marine Area Command, Police Divers, Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, PolAir, Marine Rescue, SES, and Surf Life Saving NSW.
