A public health alert is being issued for more than a dozen types of soup products, including those made by family-favorite Campbell’s, over concerns they are contaminated with ‘foreign material.’

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) sent out the alert last week saying an ingredient in the food – cilantro – may be contaminated with wood.

In addition to those made by Campbell’s, products include those sold by Molly’s Kitchen, Healthy Request, Sysco, Vital Pursuit and Crafted Market by Meijer.

Eleven of the 13 products are soups, one is a chili and one is a taco bowl. All but one are frozen dishes.

The were shipped to retail and institutional locations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, but the FSIS believes more products and more locations could soon be added to the advisory.

It is not known how wood made its way into ingredients, but the FSIS issued its notice after being notified that an FDA-approved ingredient, cilantro, was recalled for foreign material.

The Molly’s Kitchen products include: Frozen Kitchen White Bean Chicken Chili; Frozen Kitchen Cheesy Chicken Enchilada Soup; Frozen Kitchen Baja Cheesy Chicken Enchilada Soup; and Frozen Kitchen Chicken Tortilla Soup.

One Sysco item, Frozen Chicken Tortilla Soup, is on the health alert list.

The Healthy Request product is Frozen Mexican Style Chicken Tortilla Soup.

Vital Pursuit’s product is Frozen Southwest Style Beef Taco Bowl and Crafted Market by Meijer’s item is Coconut Chicken Thai Style Soup.

Establishment numbers of the products are P-17644; 17644B and CA-711 and lot codes include 1 05025; 1 05825; 1 06325; and 1 03425.

The complete list and product images are available from the FSIS.

The FSIS urged customers and any entities that may have the products to not consume or serve them.

They can either be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase.

A public health alert is different from a recall, which involves a company pulling its products from shelves over safety concerns.

Meanwhile, the FSIS issues an alert to ‘inform the public about potential health risks in cases where a recall cannot be recommended,’ the USDA states.
