Americans have been left dumbfounded after a driver was fined for travelling over the speed limit in Australia.

American expat Sophia Kim said she was shocked after receiving a $295 fine for driving 20km/h over the limit in Sydney on May 23.

She said in a TikTok video she was too ‘stressed’ to have noticed the signs warning her of the speed limit and cameras in the Cross City Tunnel.

Ms Kim received backlash on social media for questioning whether or not she could fight the fine as it was her first time driving through the tunnel.

Americans came to her defence when the video was shared to Twitter questioning the use of cameras and how seriously the speed limit was taken.

Several claimed police were more relaxed about speed in the United States saying the signs were more like ‘suggestions’.

‘Discovered Australia loves revenue raising,’ one wrote.

‘We have speed “suggestions” over here. Everyone does five to ten above usually,’ a second wrote.

‘A speed limit in the US is more like a suggestion,’ a third added.

Other Americans were embarrassed by Ms Kim’s behaviour.

‘Good god. She makes me embarrassed to be American,’ a user wrote.

‘We have speed cameras back home too and you shouldn’t be speeding period.’

Ms Kim claimed she didn’t know Australia had more speed cameras than her home nation.

‘(I) didn’t realise that you guys have, like, cameras for speeding in the tunnels,’ she said.

‘In America if you run a red light there will be cameras maybe.

‘But if it’s for speeding, it’s like a police officer with the little machine that tells the police officer if you’re speeding or not,’ she said, referencing handheld radar speed guns.

After pleading ignorance and questioning if she could get off the fine, Australians criticised her for not abiding by the road laws.

‘Just don’t speed, think of others while on the road,’ one TikTok user wrote.

‘Yeah unfortunately they wont do anything on appeal if it’s just because you don’t know the road rules,’ a second wrote.

‘Simple, read signs and don’t speed and the signs are bright you cannot miss them,’ a third added.
