US Open fan breaks silence on video of another man ‘handing his wife a drink’ as he reveals truth behind viral moment

The cocktail-holding US Open fan who appeared to watch on as another man gave his wife a drink has spoken out – insisting all is not as it seems in the viral video.

Footage of the apparent awkward moment set the internet ablaze on Wednesday after a man in a light blue polo was seen returning to his seat in New York with the tournament’s signature $23 ‘honey deuce’ cocktails in both hands, before he was seemingly snubbed by his partner sitting next to him.

After another spectator beat him to it by leaning in and handing the woman a drink first, his bemused reaction while still holding two cocktails quickly went viral on social media, with the US Open even sharing it on its official account.

However, the man in question has now given his side of the story; denying that he was left hanging on the night and instead revealing that his wife was sitting in the row below.

The unnamed 43-year-old, a Wall Streeter from Brooklyn Heights, said sarcastically to the New York Post: ‘It was very nice of the US Open to zoom in on me and not pan out or let that video run for two seconds longer.’

He then continued: ‘If you look in the bottom right hand corner of the video closely, you can briefly see a blonde with [a bob haircut], and that’s my wife. She’s leaning over and I’m actually looking at her.

‘We were with another couple who’s friends of ours and we were in stacked seating. My wife was sitting in the seat below the blonde lady, who’s our friend, and her husband was sitting in the seat above her, so that’s why he gave her the drink.’

While the truth behind the video is a little different, the man did confirm that he was snubbed by his actual wife after the cameras cut away from him.

‘There’s always a long line [at the bar], so I took one for the team and waited 25 minutes,’ he continued. ‘When I got back to our seats, I was expecting my wife to be like, “Thank you, honey,” but she was already holding [a honey deuce], so she was like, “I don’t want it.”‘

The US Open shared a clip of the viral moment and wrote: ‘This is cinema.’ It has since garnered over 11 million views on X.

The real wife of the man in question says they have been bombarded with messages since the video surfaced, which has provided ‘a lot of laughs’ for them.

‘We emailed the US Open because we’re kind of like, “Well, do we get some free tickets or something in exchange for this viral video?”‘ she laughed.
