Veteran Today show star known for delivering baby on live TV dies at age 69: ‘He will be deeply missed’

Former Today show star Dr. Ric Porter has died at age 69 of pancreatic cancer.

A prominent obstetrician and fertility specialist, Porter was well known to viewers as the host of Nine’s long-running life style hit of the 90s Good Medicine.

In his own field of medicine Porter rose to fame as a member of a team of doctors who delivered the first IVF birth in NSW.

Porter later hit the headlines in 2003 when he was the first doctor to deliver a baby on live TV.

Channel Nine News paid tribute to Porter in a bulletin on Saturday.

Porter was part of a landmark moment in the history of Australian TV when he lead a team to deliver a child live on television.

The caesarian birth took place at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital and was captured by Today show cameras.

Host Tracey Grimshaw was inside the delivery room for the live cross as Dr. Porter guided viewers through the procedure.

Viewers watched breathless as mum Leanne Cooper deliver a born Thomas Cooper.

Remembering the milestone event in 2022 Porter told Today viewers: ‘It went so well, it was a great morning and a good outcome.

‘The baby cried when it was meant to cry, mum and dad were happy. And Tracey [Grimshaw] was quite emotional over it all.’
