I’m a vet and these are the things dog owners do that I can’t stand – and almost everyone is guilty of them

  • Dr Laura warned against dog parks and hard chew toys

A top veterinarian has revealed the three things dog owners do that she hates.

Dr Laura Robinson, known online as Vet Lo, said if dog owners refrain from these three acts, it will ‘make their vet happy’.

She said ‘pet parents’ shouldn’t take their dogs to dog parks, let them chew on antlers/hard toys or use ‘all-natural’, ‘over-the-counter’ flea and tick prevention products like essential oils.

The first thing on Dr Laura’s list of things dog owners shouldn’t do is to take them to dog parks.

‘I know they’re fun but all I see is dog bites, fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and other injuries,’ the American vet explained in an Instagram video.

Dr Laura advised against giving dogs antlers: 'The amount of times I've seen dogs come in with cracked teeth because they're given a too hard of a chew toy is too numerous to count'

Secondly, the animal doctor warned against giving pets antlers, which are available at many major pet stores, to chew on.

‘The amount of times I have seen dogs come in with cracked teeth because they are given a too hard of a chew toy is way too numerous to count,’ she said.

‘The rule of thumb: bang the thing you want to give your dog against your knee cap; if it hurts, it’s too hard.’

Lastly, Dr Laura advised against ‘all-natural’ products that claim to prevent fleas and ticks and that are available over the counter.

‘These do not work. I repeat, these do not work,’ she said.

Dr Laura’s advice racked up more than 49,700 views and sparked a lively discussion among animal lovers.

‘Spot on! Nice to hear honesty from a vet!’ one viewer wrote.

Many were outraged at the claim essential oils ‘don’t work’ for flea prevention, but one veterinary nurse hit back, saying: ‘We heard so many times how essential oils actually make dogs so sick… especially oregano.’

Others slammed pet stores for selling antler chews for the potential injuries they cause and were thankful for Dr Laura’s ‘rule of thumb’.

‘I just don’t get how people still think antlers are an okay chew toy,’ one woman said.

‘100 per cent on the antlers… my Boxer is sporting a crown due to them. I now use them if my nail can penetrate it, then they can have it,’ a second said.

‘I know dogs need to chew on stuff but I never knew they could crack their teeth… it makes so much sense though when I stop to think about it! Thanks for the tip about the knee cap!’ a third added.
