Victoria Police is investigating claims some officers have been altering their gender status to ‘neutral’ to collect higher pay in the form of a taxpayer-funded clothing allowance.
Male police officers receive a $2,554 civilian clothing allowance each, while their female colleagues receive $3,674 added to their pay.
The allegations involve officers changing their gender status in the HR system because those who are gender neutral get the higher female allowance.

According to last year’s official figures 32 Victoria Police employees described themselves as non-binary while that number jumped to 111 by May 31 this year.
‘Victoria Police is aware of these accusations and will be looking further into the matter,’ a spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
The claims first emerged on the discernableofficial Instagram page.
‘We have unconfirmed reports from inside Victoria Police that management is pulling their hair out after a majority of a CIU (crime investigation unit) in southern region changed their profile in the HR system to be ‘gender neutral’, the page wrote.
‘Members have confirmed that they will receive an extra $1,300 per year as a result of doing so and that it appears in their pay as a clothing allowance.’
One source told The Herald Sun it would be terrible news and offensive to the LGBTQI+ community if the allegations were true.
‘It goes to their integrity,’ the source said. ‘For VicPol, this would be terrible and its taxpayers’ money, this is offensive to genuine non-binary employees.’
Deputy Commissioner Neil Paterson said in February that Victoria Police was committed to addressing gender inequality.
‘We all have a responsibility to our LGBTIQ+ employees and the LGBTIQ+ community we serve to be a safe and respectful workforce where all people, regardless of their sexual identity, gender expression or sex characteristics are encouraged to excel and thrive,’ he said.
