Video of petting zoo giraffe shows it in distress

A heartbreaking video shows the moment a giraffe appears to be distressed while hitting its head and pacing inside of an enclosure at the Texas State Fair’s petting zoo.

Fair-goer Stephanie Coon posted a video of the animal to Facebook and claimed the giraffe at the fair’s Children’s Health Barnyard had blood coming out of its nose and mouth and a cut on its chest.

She also said the giraffe kept hitting its head.

The video was filmed earlier this week

In another Facebook post, Meredith Plunkett said that a representative for the fair told her that the giraffe was injured during opening day when it became nervous and scared by the fireworks.

According to The Dallas Morning News, fair spokeswoman Karissa Condoianis said officials did not have confirmation about what happened to the giraffe.

‘The giraffe was young, and this was its first show,’ she said. ‘The environment for this giraffe did not suit its disposition.’

As a result, the giraffe was returned to its home in Kansas at Hedrick’s Exotic Animal Farm.

For years, owner Joe Hedrick has brought animals to the fair for the petting zoo.

Condoianis said that Hedrick already had the giraffe under supervision by a veterinarian.

Hedrick also consulted with three other vets who said the giraffe could stay at the fair and was healthy.

However, Hedrick decided to bring the giraffe back to his farm in Kansas on Sunday.

According to Hedrick’s website for his farm, he owns several exotic animals including zebras, camels, kangaroo and more.

The petting zoo at the fair remains open.
