Video shows effect of super volcano eruption on Auckland

A video has been created showing the mass destruction an undersea super-volcano eruption would bring to Auckland.

The chilling footage was created as part of research undertaken by Professor Colin Wilson of Victoria University.

Mr Wilson won the Rutherford Medal on Tuesday night for his work on the risk of eruptions in New Zealand according to Newshub.

His research makes him a ‘world-renowned geologist’ according to the Rutherford Medal selection panel.

Mr Wilson’s studies found a volcanic eruption in the Hauraki Gulf – such as that shown in the simulation – would destroy anything within a 2.5km radius and severely hinder transport networks.

The creators of the video said the projected video was intended to simulate the view from an Auckland lounge.

It shows a massive explosion before rubble and ash soar into the sky, and a huge wave hits the coast and wipes out everything in its path.

‘High-end 3D technologies and particle effects were combined with a background plate, creating a realistic rendering of a catastrophic event.

‘The result… frightened children [and] de-valued waterfront property.’
