The mobile phone video was taken in the Ghobeiri district of Beirut in Lebanon and shows the terrified and twitching animals being hauled from the floor and savagely thrown into a pick-up truck by a man in uniform.

Heartbreakingly, other strays who appear not to have been poisoned were seen coming over to apparently try and comfort the dying dogs.

Harrowing footage showed dogs left in agony and foaming at the mouth after being fed poisoned meat by pest control workers in Lebanon

And district authorities admitted they lured the trusting animals with poisoned meat.

The footage was shared by campaign group Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA).

A BETA spokesman said: ‘This sickening level of abuse, torture, suffering and complete disregard for life and law is absolutely shocking.

‘They had not even died before they were thrown into the back of a municipal vehicle.

‘All of this suffering did not bring any benefit to people or animals.

‘In fact, it harms national efforts to manage homeless dogs.’

Authorities in Ghobeiri said they committed the cruel act as the dogs are ‘aggressive and attacked many people’.

But BETA doubt the claims and asked to see reports on the alleged attacks.

Local media reported the men who carried out the killings have been arrested and an investigation launched.

Poisoning is illegal under Lebanon’s new animal welfare laws and has long been a problem in the country.

Pets are sold with little or no regulation and are often abandoned when the owner tires of them – leading to a large number of strays.
