Awe-struck San Diego Zoo-goers watched one of the world’s most feared predators catching its prey on Wednesday when a massive polar bear captured and ate an unsuspecting duck that landed in the bear’s enclosure.
California tourist Amy McBride, who was visiting the world-famous zoo with her family three days ago, shot video of the predatory moment with her cell phone before uploading it to social media.
Her footage shows the duck wading through the water in the bear’s habitat that day as the arctic carnivore sneaks up on the bird by swimming silently under water.
Moments later, the predator emerges from the pool beneath the mallard, which realized far too late that it’s about to become a snack.

The bear grabs the bird with its powerful jaws before it can take flight as onlookers gasp and groan in astonishment.
‘He got him! That thing didn’t make it. That’s a good bear! Eat it, mama!’ a woman says during the video.
The bear doesn’t eat the duck right away. Instead it plays with the water fowl for a few moments, but eventually it starts to bite and dismember the lifeless bird.
In the wild, polar bears’ most common meal is the ringed seal, according to the San Diego Zoo’s website.
The zoo bears’ diet normally consists of dog kibble, trout and other fish. Cow femur bones and thawed rabbits are offered weekly. Root vegetables and lettuce are provided as treats.

Duck isn’t usually on the menu, but the apex predators will eat just about anything they can catch.
McBride’s three-year-old daughter was mad at the polar bear.
‘He ate the ducky!’ she said.
