Vigilante driver charged with murder after ‘deliberately mowing down cyclist’ on suburban Perth street

A cyclist has died after purposefully being run down by a driver who was attempting an act of vigilantism, police have alleged.

The 48-year-old cyclist was mown down on the corner of Lion Street and Jupiter Street in Carlisle, Perth, by a male driver, 27, at 1:45pm on Friday.

Police allege the 27-year-old swerved his Kia Carnival sedan toward the cyclist who was then dragged for more than 30m on the road before the driver fled the scene, reports WA Today.

Paramedics rushed the cyclist to Royal Perth Hospital but he died shortly after 2:30pm.

Major crash detective inspector David Gorton said the collision is being treated as a ‘deliberate act’ and the driver has since been found and charged with murder.

Det Insp Gorton told reporters the incident could have stemmed from a dispute over a personal item the two parties had been having since the day before.

‘We are looking into what we believe was an incident the previous day. We believe that might have involved a personal property item,’ he said.

‘We just want to reiterate to members of the public that if you are a victim of crime, no matter how serious the incident is, we urge you to contact police if you feel that you need assistance.

‘Don’t take things into your own hands.’

Prior to their alleged dispute the two men were not known to each other.

Police found the 27-year-old after pedestrians and other drivers called triple-0 to report a man driving erratically on the road.

He will appear in Perth Magistrates Court for sentencing on Sunday.

Friends and family of the accused who were also in the car at the time of the incident have been questioned by police.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing and police urge anyone with any dashcam footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
