Striking a novelty pose is one way to make your wedding photos stand out from the crowd, but one bridal party has been slammed for making the female members pose for a ‘trashy’ and ‘degrading’ snap.

An image shared to Reddit, believed to show a wedding in the US, showed five women in red dresses kneeling in front of a row of smiling groomsmen.

All the men are pictured standing with huge grins across their faces hands in their pocket, while the women are shown on their knees with their heads near the men’s crotches.

Some commenters likened the scene to The Handmaid’s Tale, while others asked if it was meant to represent a sex act.

A wedding party has been slammed for creating a picture that looks like it’s from A Handmaid’s Tale after five women dressed in red dresses knelt down in front of groomsmen.

Sharing the the image to the subreddit r/weddingshaming, a user wrote: ‘This trend is universally bad, but this iteration is the worst I’ve personally seen to date’

Other redditors shared their shock at the ‘horrifying’ image, saying it was ‘humiliating’ and ‘weird’.

Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of enslaved women who wear red dresses and are forced to submit to men.

The colour of the bridesmaid’s dresses and their poses caused many users to draw parallels between the picture and the literary classic, which was made into a hit TV show in 2017.

‘Definitely wouldn’t be part of this weird Handmaids Tale-inspired shoot’ one user said.

‘Do you really want to show this to your children one day “Oh look at the picture where I’m pretending to b*** your Dad dear”,’ another wrote.

‘Oh this is humiliating. I’d refuse to be a part of this,’ a third said.

‘What the hell are they doing? Are they meant to look like they are b***ing the guys or is it meant to be a submissive thing? Either way this is really f**king odd’ one confused internet user added.

‘With the red colours I wonder if this is supposed to be some sort of “Handmaid’s Tale” tribute’ another said.

Others were quick to say how they would refused to do the shoot if they were bridesmaids or photographers.

‘Tacky as it gets. I would be the b**** that would absolutely refuse to do the photo even if it made a giant scene at the wedding. Just being asked would probably end the friendship’ one said.

‘As a photographer I would refuse to take the photo. No way is my name going on something this trashy. Get Aunt Karen to take it. She’s been shadowing all of my shots anyway!’

While others questioned the odd choice of dress for the men.

‘I’ve never seen so many baggy, ill-fitted suits, all in one picture in my life’ one use said.

Another joked: ‘Maybe the women are adjusting the leg length on these appalling fit suits. These guys obviously didn’t visit a tailor.’
