A single mom who put a recording device in her nine-year-old daughter’s backpack to catch out school bullies faces a felony charge.
Sarah Sims, from Norfolk, Virginia, claims repeated calls and emails to her nine-year-old daughter’s school, Ocean View elementary, went unanswered when she complained the fourth-grader was being bullied.
In September, the mother took matters into her own hands when she sent her daughter to school with a digital recorder in her backpack to find out if the teacher was ignoring the situation.

The recorder was found and the child has since been moved to another classroom.
About a month later, Sims was charged with use of a device to intercept oral communication and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor, local television station WAVY-TV reported.
‘I was mortified,’ she told the television station. ‘The next thing I know I’m a felon. Felony charges and a misdemeanor when I’m trying to look out for my kid. What do you do?’
Her attorney, Kristin Paulding, said: ‘They aren’t making this about that classroom. There are charges that carry jail time.’
