- Virgin Australia boss John Borghetti announced they had a need for speed
- The new jets will mean flights from Sydney to Los Angleses will take seven hours
Travelling to America on long haul flights could soon be a thing of the past for Australians with flight times slashed in half.
People will soon be able to trade in the traditional 14-hour flight for a speedy seven hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles.
Virgin Australia boss John Borghetti predicted supersonic jets could be used to kill off treacherous long-haul flights.

‘It is entirely reasonable to believe that in the next 10 years we will see supersonic jets safely and sustainably flying commercial passengers,’ Virgin Australia boss John Borghetti said
At the Safeskies conference in Canberra, Mr Borghetti said there was a huge need for speed.
The airline giant said they were focusing on seeing ‘how fast’ an aircraft could fly non-stop rather than ‘how far’, according to Australian Financial Review.
‘It is entirely reasonable to believe that in the next 10 years we will see supersonic jets safely and sustainably flying commercial passengers,’ he said.
The Virgin boss said they wanted to develop aircraft that could fly more than 2,300 km/h, which would dramatically slash the almost 14 hour flight from Sydney to LA.
Using Virgin’s Supersonic ‘Baby Boom’ jet, travellers could get from Sydney to Perth in just over two hours or even Sydney to Hong Kong in four hours, according to Australian Business Traveller.
During the Sir Reginald Ansett memorial lecture, Mr Borghetti said that fast flights aren’t ‘a far-off dream’ with one supersonic demonstrator reportedly to begin passenger flights in 2020.
