Voice-controlled HiMirror identifies skin imperfections

Snow White’s stepmother might have had her magic mirror, but the brutally-honest device is not just the stuff of fairytales.

A tech company has created a voice-controlled vanity mirror that uses an in-built camera and artificial intelligence to tell users exactly what is wrong with their skin – down to the last wrinkle, red spot and open pore.

The HiMirror Plus+, which is sold at Selfridges for £319, takes a photograph of the user’s face that is analysed to a Skin Index Synthesis, assessing its health, clarity, firmness, texture, and brightness.

The HiMirror Plus+ takes a photograph of the user’s face, which it then analyses to detect any problem areas that need targeting. Above, the dark spots on the user’s face are identified

Each of these is then rated on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 representing perfect skin.

The device then suggests a skincare regime to help tackle these issues – and takes further photographs to track whether they are effective.

The company claims to offer results similar to a clinical skin analysis, without the hassle or cost of an appointment.

The device, which can be fitted to any hard surface, can be operated using Amazon’s Alexa voice-control system, allowing users to order any recommended skin products without hitting a button.

How does the HiMirror Plus+ smart mirror work?

The HiMirror Plus+ takes a photograph of the users skin which is then analysed by an inbuilt system.

It produces a Skin Index Synthesis, a combined assessment of skin’s Health, Clarity, Firmness, Texture, and Brightness.

The mirror also identifies area with common skin imperfections, including fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and roughness. Each of these is graded on a scale of 1-100, with 100 representing ‘perfect’ skin conditions.

After it has analysed your face, it then develops a custom-built skincare routine and even recommends products that will address your specific needs.

Once a skincare regime is chosen, the user can then track his or her progress with more photos.

The images create a skincare record and are analysed by the mirror to identify products that are working effectively and those that are not.

The mirror also has an attachment that can be placed on the skin to take readings of moisture levels.

As well as analysing your wrinkles, the mirror also uses augmented reality (AR) to let users virtually ‘try on’ make-up looks before taking the plunge in real life.

There’s also tutorials that teach you how to contour and shape your eyebrows to best suit your face shape.

It also features an ambient makeup light that recreates five different lighting scenarios to finally put an end to the frustration of doing your makeup in one light and finding it’s far too heavy when you move into another.

It can recreate a brightly lit office, shopping centre, dimly lit restaurant, sunset and sunny day outdoors, hoping to prepare its users for every eventuality.

It also comes with a weighing scale attachment, which allows similar analysis to be carried out on the user’s body make-up, including body fat percentages.

A HiMirror spokeswoman said: ‘The skin history tracking system lets you view your progress each day and records your skin’s condition and then compares it with the previous months.

‘It is capable of assessing your skin’s condition so that you may take early measures to improve your skin and achieve your beauty goals. Simply take a photo and receive your skin analysis in a matter of seconds.’
