The safest car that money can buy scored nearly 100% in a safety test conducted by the European New Car Assessment Programme.
The test by Euro NCAP rates cars in a number of categories and monitors passenger protection and safety tech.
According to tests, the Volvo XC60, worth £35,000, is the safest car you could own.
The family SUV scored five stars out of five on the Euro NCAP ratings – and was praised for is structure and the protection it gives passengers.
The car scored 98 per cent on its adult occupant rating, higher than any other car tested and also had the highest safety rating for children at 87 per cent.
Away from statistics, the car was praised for the protection it gives to passengers in a head-on shunt and in a T-junction smash.

The SUV has airbags at the front and on the side which, combined with its bulky structure, meant that dummies used in testing barely suffered any damage.
This protecting was reflected in the safety video which showed how good the Volvo XC60 is at protecting families.
The safety video also reflected that passengers were unlikely to suffer whiplash thanks to seatbelts that stop the neck from snapping forward.

The 2017 model also has a range of other safety tech that helped it to score 95 per cent in the safety assisst category.
The car has auto emergency braking and also has a lane assist tool.
The crash report submitted by Euro NCAP said: ‘In both the side barrier test and the more severe side pole impact, protection of critical body areas was good and the XC60 scored maximum points.
‘The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking system scored maximum points in tests of its functionality at the low-speeds typical of city driving, with collisions avoided at all test speeds.’
