It was a few years into Michael Jackson’s friendship with the Robson family when he decided he need to see more of their child Wade.
And so, with the singer’s help and financial backing, the Robsons were uprooted from Australia to Los Angeles in the early 1990s.
Robson’s mother left her husband and moved the family to LA, with the move helping launch Wade’s career.
But it was not the right move for Wade’s father Dennis, who would eventually take his own life in 2002 after he found himself alone in Australia with his family thousands of miles away.
Dennis Robson hanged himself in his apartment just hours after his eldest son Shane had departed for Los Angeles (Dennis and Wade above)
Farewell: Shane was going to California indefinitely to join his mother and two siblings, who had moved to Los Angeles at the behest of Michael Jackson (Shane departing above)
Tragic end: He learned of the news the next day as did the rest of the family, who said that Dennis (above) was bipolar
Dennis had struggled when he visited LA. Wade said: ‘He was doing things like going on walks in the middle of the night through LA. Getting on buses and we would have to find him.’
‘I think it terrified me but my reaction was just to get angry, and I just wanted him to go.’
Chantal, Wade’s younger sister, said that her brother pushed his father away at that time.
It was hardest of all though on Shane, the older brother who had remained in Australia with his father.
In 2002, he decided he might want to make the move to Los Angeles as well.
He was the last member of the family to see Dennis alive. The day that he left, his father hanged himself.
‘At that point I didn’t know if I’m leaving for good,’ said Shane.
‘I’m taking six months off and going to hang out with the family.’
But he began to realize something was wrong with his father just before his flight.
Shane said: ‘The day that I left my grandparents, his mom and dad, came over before I headed to the airport.
‘And I remember dad didn’t say a word nothing at all. Kind of like a statue staring off in the distance.
He added: ‘And then I remember saying goodbye and giving him a hug and I don’t think he ever hugged me.’
Shane described his father’s state at the time by saying: ‘The lights were on but no one was home.’
Speaking of his father’s suicide, Shane said: ‘I think my response was anger.’
Wade refused to spent time acknowledging the loss however, and quickly got back to work on the upcoming tours for Britney Spears and *NSYNC (above with Spears in 2002)
‘I don’t know, I feel like from the next day I just started stitching myself up again,’ said Wade
Could ever be: ‘Michael had some kind of obsession with Britney and he would call me and ask me: What is she like? Isn’t she sexy? Isn’t she beautiful?’ recalled Wade
His mother, Joy, said: ‘I brought all the children in for the night and we laughed and we cried and we laughed and we cried.’
But Wade, then 19, did not cry beyond that first night.
And don’t it make you sad about it: That relationship would come crashing down after it was reported that Robson had a relationship with Spears while she was dating *NSYNC front man Justin Timberlake
Wade instead focused on his career. He said: ‘I don’t know, I feel like from the next day I just started stitching myself up again.’
That required him to get back to work in then studio, where he was serving as the creative director for the two biggest acts in the world at the time – Britney Spears and *NSYNC.
That relationship would come crashing down after it was reported that Robson had a relationship with Spears while she was dating *NSYNC front man Justin Timberlake.
His decision to pursue her though may have had less to do with his own feelings and more to do with Jackson’s infatuation.
‘Michael had some kind of obsession with Britney and he would call me and ask me: What is she like? Isn’t she sexy? Isn’t she beautiful?’ recalled Wade.
‘And wondering if I could set up a way for them to meet.’
