Wallabies loss to Ireland in the Lansdowne Cup: pictures reveal rowdy fans

Thousands of wild fans descended upon Sydney’s Allianz stadium for the final leg of the Lansdowne Cup Test series between Ireland and Australia.

And while Wallabies fans may still be getting over the narrow defeat decided by a controversial refereeing blunder, photos capture the excitement of the night.

From rowdy pitch invaders getting tackled by authorities to a cheeky security guard accidentally exposing his bare bottom – Daily Mail Australia takes a look at what went down in last night’s game.

One Irish fan in a green hoodie ran across the pitch with two security guards chasing him closely behind.

A guard’s pants were poorly fitted despite him wearing a belt. His pants fell so far down, his backside was completely exposed to a stadium full of fans.

Another Irish fan dressed in jeans and a national flag beanie dashed onto the pitch straight after the final whistle to congratulate and hug the Irish players.

His celebratory pitch invasion was short-lived, with the fan being promptly tackled by a member from security.

Superintendent Bradley Hodder told Daily Mail Australia, ‘Overall police are happy with the behaviour of the crowd however it’s disappointing a number of people invaded the pitch at the end of the game.’

Pitch invaders can be fined up to $6,000 for entering a playing field without authority and for assaulting police officers in the process. In more extreme cases, a life time ban from the stadium can be imposed.

A questionable referee call later in the match outraged Wallaby fans and the online community.

It was after the television match official (TMO) failed to declare that Irish player Jacob Stockdale had deliberately stuck out his hand to stop Bernard Foley passing to a handful of Wallabies players on the wing.

The TMO judged there was not sufficient evidence to overrule the on-field decision.

It was a decisive call that ultimately saw the Wallabies losing the game and the series, and one that stoked the ire of the online community.

‘What rubbish Wallabies robbed by dud ref,’ wrote one Twitter user.

‘French rugby referee and TMO all need glasses. Wallabies robbed again!’ tweeted another.

Ireland won the match with a 20-16 lead over the Wallabies, winning the Landsdowne Cup series 2-1.
