Wannabe DJ sparks outrage by advertising for someone who is ‘not white and ‘sex positive’ to share a houseboat – paying £420 a month for room so small it can barely contain single bed

  • Henry White was hunting for a person to live on barge in Deptford Creek, London
  • But his advert was promptly removed from Facebook after being branded ‘vile’

A wannabe DJ has sparked outrage by posting a room share advert requesting someone who is ‘not white’ and ‘sex positive’ to share a houseboat.

Privately educated Henry White was also slammed for asking for a new tenant who would pay £420 a month for a room that is so small it is barely big enough to contain a single bed.

The house share advert was posted to a Facebook group called the Southeast London Housemate Co-op which boasts over 60,000 members.

But within hours of being seen by others on social media it was taken down after a barrage of complaints criticising the advert as ‘vile’ and ‘discriminatory.’

One woman wrote: ‘I can’t even engage. Everything about this post is vile. From the racism to the absolute ethical nature of renting out a miniscule cardboard box on water for £420 plus slave labour.’

In the lengthy advert accompanied by photos of the room to rented out White, 27, said he and two others live on a barge called ‘Luna’ in Deptford Creek, south east London.

He wrote: ‘Sex positive, queer household cooperative looking for folk who aren’t white to become a fourth member.

‘We are looking for someone who is 21+, not white, and is interested in helping with the day-to-day maintenance of the boat, working to set up the cooperative and engaging with the creek community.’

Describing those already living in the shared space, he added: ‘There’s currently two white and one black person living on the boat.

‘It’s a beautiful and unique space where we share food, resources, and space with each other. We’re looking for someone who wants to join in this vibe’.

Photographs with the advert show a single wooden slatted bed crammed in between two walls. There is a single window and radiator with two shelves fixed to one of the walls.

Other photographs show a small bathroom and kitchen area.

The description goes on to reveal the space being advertised used to be two rooms but now converted into one and that its former occupier had left behind much of his personal possessions which were being cleared out.’

The monthly rent was £420 with a deposit of the same amount.

White, who says he is an aspiring DJ on his social media profile, attended £24,000-a-year Latymer School.

His parents live in a £1.1million home in Acton West, London, with his father Mark a company director.

Other members of the Facebook group who complained said the dingy space being advertised was not legally able to be advertised as it was so small.

Geri Matt wrote: ‘It is illegal to discriminate in this way. Plus to rent a room to 1 individual the size must be 6.51m2 or 60 square feet which is about 6ft by 11ft or 8ft by 8ft.’

White was unavailable for comment.
