Washed-up reality television star claims Californian licence overrides cancelled NSW permit

Reality television star Jay Lyon has been found guilty of driving on a cancelled Australian licence – after trying to argue he thought his American driver’s permit meant he was allowed back on the road in Sydney.

Lyon found fame in 2008 when he appeared in ‘The Hills’ reality television show and is also known for his relationships with supermodel Miranda Kerr and fellow reality star Whitney Port.

Lyon was riding his grey ‘Piaggo Vespa scooter’ along Syd Enfield Drive in Bondi Junction earlier this year when police pulled him over after an automatic scan of the number plate revealed he, the owner, didn’t have a valid licence.

The Sydney-based model and producer did once hold a motorcycle learner’s permit – but he was disqualified from driving in April, 2016 after he was found guilty of mid-range drink driving.

In October that year the learner’s permit was cancelled, police facts tendered to the court say.

Lyon told police he hadn’t held a NSW motorcycle licence for ‘two years’ but had a Californian licence.

‘He repeatedly argued (to police) his Californian licence was valid,’ the facts said.

Lyon was given a section 10 good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to the charge.

He made the headlines after ‘getting close with’ Jodi Anasta (Gordon) on the red carpet last year.

Prior to that the former star opened a meatball restaurant in Sydney’s CBD but the business venture failed within the year.

The location of the eatery, named the Original Meatball Company, was the reason for its failure, according to Lyon.

The City star, whose real name is Brent Tuhtan, played down the closure and said:  ‘This is simply a strategic move for OMC so we can set the platform for potential growth.’
