Incredible footage shows the moment an avalanche engulfed a Washington highway.
Mounds of snow can be seen pouring onto the SR 20 east of Newhalem, which is known as the North Cascades Highway, at about 10.30am on Sunday.
Halting traffic in both directions, the slide is estimated to be 300 feet wide and 30 feet high by Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT), King 5 News reported.
Some 60 people are said to be behind the avalanche area but WSDOT say they can access food and shelter.
Rob Mercer, who was traveling past when the slide began, captured the nail-biting moment on camera.
Endless swathes of snow can be seen tumbling into the road and accumulating in an enormous heap.
