Jordan Spieth took a detour via the clubhouse roof during a remarkable end to his third round at the Valero Texas Open on Saturday.

The three-time major winner carded a level-par 72 to leave himself three-under-par for the tournament – 12 shots off the lead in San Antonio.

But his scorecard told only half of the story after Spieth finished with a double-bogey seven that included visits to a drainage ditch and the clubhouse roof.

Spieth’s problems began when he pulled his drive left on the par-five final hole at TPC San Antonio.

That left the world No 19 near the foot of a tree, a few yards off the fairway. From there, Spieth chose to hit a daring shot through more hazards – rather than chip back on to the fairway.

Unfortunately he found only more trouble: Spieth’s second shot ended up near a drainage ditch – still 183 yards away from the hole.

With the drain between his ball and the hole, Spieth was forced to get creative. Because he was hitting from a penalty area, he was not afforded relief. And so the 30-year-old again chose to hit away from the green and towards the clubhouse of TPC San Antonio.

‘If you’re going to do that, I’m going to move my car,’ someone – believed to be his caddie – could be heard telling Spieth, who then asked an official: ‘If I hit it over on the deck, where’s my drop?’

After a long deliberation, the three-time major winner heaved a shot towards the roof of the clubhouse. The ball trickled into the gutter, sending the PGA Tour announcers into a frenzy.

‘This is absurd!’ one joked. ‘Only Jordan Spieth,’ added another. But the shot allowed the 30-year-old a drop, not far from the fairway. From there, Spieth fired his approach on to the green.

Incredibly, that left him with a par putt from 53ft.  But Spieth, now visibly furious with himself and struggling to contain his emotions, ended three-putting for par.
