Watch the moment the furious son of a former England footballer angrily confronts his French rival after he sparked mass collision in Olympics men’s 5,000m

  • George Mills appeared to receive a push from Frenchman Hugo Hay in the race
  • This led to the Team GB star colliding with another runner on the other side
  • The son of ex-England player Danny, went down with three other runners

The son of a former England footballer was left fuming after his 5,000m heat at the Paris Olympics, after he was involved in a mass collision on the last straight of the race.

George Mills, son of ex-Leeds defender Danny, was hoping to progress out of the 5,000m heat this morning and entered the final straight side-by-side with Frenchman Hugo Hay behind the leading pack.

However, Mills appeared to get a shove from Hay, and the Englishman tangled legs with the runner on the other side of him.

Both men went tumbling down to the ground, along with two unfortunate runners who were just behind and couldn’t react in time to get around them.

Mills was furious after the race in which he finished in 18th and meant he did not qualify, and immediately approached Hay – who crossed the line seventh to make it through to the next round.

More to follow….

Mills confronted Hay and started pointing at him while having some stern words to say to the 27-year-old Frenchman.

When asked to explain by the BBC what happened, he said: ‘I think it’s pretty clear. I got stepped out on as I was about to kick on the home straight and boom, the French lad took me down.’

When asked what he told Hay after the race, he responded: ‘I probably wouldn’t be allowed to say.’

The BBC then asked him whether had spoken to any officials, to which he responded: ‘I haven’t seen any yet. But I’m pretty sure we’ll put an appeal in I hope.

‘From my perspective that was the perfect qualifier for me. Going through the first 2,000 in six minutes. I was like ‘alright – nobody in this field can run away from me at this pace’.

‘So I was just sitting, waiting and biding my time, gonna kick off down the home straight and bang hit the deck. What can you do?’

Mills nearly had a fall earlier in the race, as he revealed he hurdled a faller with 800m to go.

He said: ‘Once it happened I thought ‘thank god I hope I don’t have a fall’ then later hit the deck.’
