Digging secret tunnels and dropping through ceilings are among countless bizarre ways that thieves have tried to steal valuable items.

But no one expected the moment a woman bit through a shop’s anti-theft cable and ran off with a brand new iPhone 14 Plus.

Unbelievable footage shows the woman – known only as ‘Qiu’ – browsing devices at a store in Fujian, southeastern China.

After checking out what appears to be a MacBook, she heads over to look at the latest 7,000 yuan (£949) iPhone model.

Qiu is then seen to examine the device for a couple of seconds, before unexpectedly lifting it to her mouth and gnawing into the wire.

For Apple devices, this connector is often composed of blue and red wires as well as tensor fibers.

This is generally attached to a dock connector, with the internals tweaked to prevent the unit from disconnecting.

While it took a few tries to set free, Qiu eventually loosened the iPhone 14 and dropped it into her bag as she hurried out of the store.

At first, this went completely unnoticed by store staff, according to the South China Morning Post, despite the blaring store alarm.

But it didn’t take police long to catch up, as Sina News claims that Qiu was arrested just 30 minutes after leaving the shop.

Although Qiu had intended to buy the iPhone after losing her own, she allegedly told officers that the prices put her off.

It’s understood that Qiu has now been detained and is under further investigation.

But the now viral footage continues to shock countless observers both in China and across the world.

‘Given the effort it must have taken to bite through the security cable, I’d say she “earned” that iPhone,’ one Twitter user wrote.

‘Her dentist is proud of their work,’ one joked as another chimed in: ‘If only she had bitten the wires to all the security cameras in the area first.’

One also added: ‘She can’t even wait until 12, September for iPhone 15,’ as another said: ‘That phone isn’t worth as much as her teeth.’
