Watford striker Troy Deeney will serve a four-match suspension after an appeal against his red card in last weekend’s 4-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town proved unsuccessful.

Deeney, the Hornets’ captain, was sent off in the 33rd minute at Vicarage Road with Watford already 2-0 down following a senseless lunge on Collin Quaner.

Quaner was close to the touchline and surrounded by two other Watford players going nowhere when Deeney brought him down and was shown a straight red card by referee Michael Oliver.

Watford lodged an appeal but this has been rejected by the Football Association and so Deeney will miss their next four Premier League fixtures.

He won’t be available for selection for their trip to Brighton this Saturday, the home Boxing Day fixture with Leicester, the home game with Swansea on December 30 and their visit to Manchester City on January 2.

Deeney became the third Watford player to be shown a red card in three matches, meaning the club have now received more red cards – nine – than any other top-flight club since the start of last season.
