Wayne Carey set to lose Channel 7 job with fans demanding refunds over his AFL grand final event

Furious fans demand REFUNDS as soon as they learn Wayne Carey will speak at grand final function – as footy great is ‘set to lose his job with Channel Seven’ in latest blow after white powder casino scandal

  • Wayne Carey has reportedly lost his job at Channel 7 over white powder scandal
  • It comes as the AFL legend lost his radio gig with Triple M last week

Wayne Carey is set to lose yet another commentary gig, with the former Kangaroos legend reportedly losing his Channel 7 job in the wake of his white powder scandal.

Carey’s contract at the network expires at the end of this season, and industry site TV Blackbox has reported it will not be renewed after the now-infamous incident where a bag of white powder fell out of his pocket while gambling at the Crown Casino in Perth on September 1.

The network placed Carey on an immediate ‘temporary suspension’ after the incident became public, but it is now understood the decision has been made not to renew his contract.

Channel 7 had already dropped him from the main Friday broadcast for AFLW star Daisy Pearce – so the writing may well have already been on the wall before the casino scandal.

It comes just days after radio station Triple M confirmed the notorious bad boy would not be returning to the network.

The fallout from the scandal has been swift and severe, and plans for Carey to attend a grand final day event in Melbourne have been thrown into disarray, with furious fans demanding refunds if he appears.

Club Noble, a venue in south-east Melbourne, announced on their Facebook page that Carey had been a last-minute addition to their grand final day breakfast alongside fellow footy greats Mick Malthouse, Jason Akermanis and Simon Madden.

With tickets starting at $75, and $150 if fans want to dine and photos with the quartet, it no doubt would’ve been quite the lucrative gig for an unemployed Carey to rebound.

But fans were furious with the club’s plan to invite the star no one else appears to want, with one even pointing out it ‘looks like Carey is struggling for a gig these days’.

That was a suggestion refuted by Club Noble, with the organisers appearing to cheekily refer to Carey’s white powder scandal.

‘Club Noble’s not the worst gig going around…could be Chemist Warehouse,’ wrote the club, finishing it with a winky face emoji as they insisted the speaking engagement was not the bottom of the barrel.

Other potential attendees insisted on ticket refunds if Carey was to appear.

‘We have already bought tickets … now I think we are entitled to a refund as Wayne Carey would not be my choice at all,’ one punter commented on the club’s Facebook announcement about the event.

‘If Carey is part of the show, no way (my) friends or I will be there. You must be kidding!’, while another called the decision to invite Carey a ‘huge mistake’.

It’s not the first event since the white powder scandal that Carey has been unwelcome at.

Last Friday, the two-time Kangaroos premiership player was due to speak at a grand final lunch for the St Kevin’s Old Boys Football Club at the Glenferrie Hotel.

Promotional material for the event didn’t feature Carey, so many of the 200-odd guests were not aware he was set to appear.

Many of said guests voiced their concerns over the footy legend speaking at the event – so St Kevin’s president Patrick Mount made the decision to cancel the appearance and ask Carey to leave.

‘There was concern in the room about Wayne being there, which we listened to, and a decision was made to remove him from speaking at the event,’ Mount said over the last-minute change.

It’s not yet known whether Carey will attend Club Noble’s event this Saturday – but it is sure to ignite some controversy if we does.
