Wayne Rooney hails Bruno Fernandes for his ‘incredible’ no-look assist to tee up Kobbie Mainoo for Man United’s second goal vs Man City… as fans ask ‘how can Red Devils’ supporters slander their captain?’

Wayne Rooney has lumped praise on Bruno Fernandes for his ‘incredible’ assist during the FA Cup final, after the Portuguese midfielder set up Kobbie Mainoo for Manchester United’s second goal against Manchester City.

United shocked Pep Guardiola’s champions by taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half, with Alejandro Garnacho capitalising on a defensive mix-up between Josko Gvardiol and Ederson, to fire the ball into an open goal.

The Red Devils doubled their lead just nine minutes later, with Garnacho feeding the ball to Fernandes just on the edge of the penalty area. The Portuguese midfielder had plenty of time to get a strike away, but instead, he seemingly produced a senastional no-look pass to Kobbie Mainoo on the left side of the box.

The young star, who was last week named in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary England squad for Euro 2024, beautifully curled the ball around Ederson into the bottom-right corner to give Erik ten Hag’s side a 2-0 lead.

Along with supporters online, Rooney, speaking to the BBC, hailed Fernandes’ moment of genius.

‘The second goal is an unbelievable goal. The pass from Bruno [Fernandes] is incredible,’ Rooney said.

Fans reacted to Fernandes’ pass online, with one writing on X (formerly Twitter): ‘This Bruno Fernandes assist was insane.’

Another praised the United captain for opting not to take a shot and instead making the pass: ‘That pass by Bruno Fernandes to pass it to Mainoo and not taking a shot wowowowoow.’

One supporter questioned why United fans are so critical of the midfielder, writing: ‘How do Manchester United fans slander Bruno Fernandes, he’s by far their best player man what an assist.’
