How does your internet speed compare? Web access across Australia ranked first to last – and the winner will surprise you
- New data has revealed which Australian city has the fastest internet speeds
- Canberra has been shown to have the fastest download speeds in the country
- Western Australia’s capital has the slowest, due to a widely spread population
Data has revealed the country’s fastest internet won’t be found in Melbourne or Sydney, but rather in Canberra.
More than 17,000 speed tests on connections across the country show the nation’s capital has quicker download speeds than any other state or territory.
The research conducted by speedtest website Ookla between July 2017 and September 2018 also showed Western Australia lagged well behind the rest.

Experts believe Canberra’s speeds can be attributed to a denser population and higher installation rates of the National Broadband Network (pictured)
Canberra had an average download speed of 35.8 megabits-per-second (Mbps).
The next highest speeds came out of Hobart with 25.8Mbps, closely followed by Sydney on 25.1, Melbourne on 24.6 and Brisbane with 24.4.
Perth came in last with barely more than 20 Mbps.
The internet speeds see Australia ranked 52nd in the world in terms of fixed broadband speeds, though the analysis shows that’s an improvement.
Technology spokesman Angus Kidman from comparison website finder.com.au told The Canberra Times it was promising to see Australia getting faster, but there is still more work to be done.
‘Our national average is on par with Sri Lanka,’ he said.

He believes that more competition between internet providers and the emergence of the National Broadband Network (NBN) are the main reasons the national average has risen.
On a state level, he says Canberra’s smaller size and population, particularly in comparison with Western Australia, is the biggest reason for a faster network speed.
A denser population and quicker deployment of the NBN resulted in their faster speeds.
