Weekend weather heatwave roasts four states in south-east Australia with temperatures in high 30s

A heatwave is set to spread itself across the country this weekend, causing sweltering conditions across four states.

The heat will extend from Western Australia, across South Australia and into NSW and Victoria, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

“The front is dragging down hot, dry and windy conditions which is causing temperatures to increase,” a spokesperson from the Bureau explained.

NSW is set to see temperatures peak on Sunday with temperatures to peak at 32C in Sydney’s CBD and 39C in Penrith.

Broken Hill and Bourke will see temperatures of 41C on Saturday and Sunday, while the hottest temperatures will be in nearby Tibooburra where it will reach 42C.

“Some locations in NSW on Sunday could exceed their maximum temperature record for the month of March, especially on and west of the ranges,” the BOM spokesperson said.

Sydney could break a 165 year record if Saturday and Sunday pass 30 degrees. Four days in a row above 30C be the first time the feat has taken place in autumn in more than 165 years. 

Meanwhile Melbourne will reach 37C on Saturday.

Brisbane will see 33C on Saturday and 32C on Sunday but high humidity is making the ‘apparent’ temperature a few degrees warmer.

Perth will experience warm, sunny days across the weekend, moderated by a south-easterly breeze.

Adelaide will be sunny and 28C on Saturday and partly cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of rain on Sunday.

There are warnings that bushfires could become “uncontrollable” this weekend.

“The hot, dry and windy weather is of concern to areas of inland NSW and Victoria, with many fires ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

“Extreme fire dangers are forecast Saturday for eastern parts of South Australia and western and central Victoria.”

A cold change is expected to bring some relief in parts of NSW and Victoria from Monday, though there isn’t any likelihood of rain.

Warm conditions are still expected to continue throughout inland NSW, Victoria and WA throughout next week.
