Wellington crash: Father of two boys killed pays emotional visit to crash scene

The devastated dad of two young boys allegedly mowed down by an out-of-control, un-licensed driver, has made an emotional visit to the scene of the crash.

Jacob Dunn, 25, allegedly performed burnouts in a Holden sedan he was not licensed to drive, before losing control and ploughing into a group of five.

Sheldon, 6, and Shane Shorey, 7, were killed instantly while walking home in Wellington, near Dubbo, from the local pool on Wednesday.

Their mother Shayleen Frail, 34, was trapped up against a fence by the Holden, while a 10-year-old family friend had his leg ripped apart by the force of the terrible crash.

Mark, 9, the older brother to Sheldon and Shane, somehow escaped without serious injury.

Their father, Joseph Shorey, making a brave visit to the scene, told media gathered he had a very simple message for hoons: ‘It’s not cool, and it’s left two of my sons dead.’

Confronting pictures show Mr Shorey with his head in his hands after arriving with friends and family, before falling to his knees and inspecting the tributes from locals.

Balloons, teddy bears and flowers adorned the tragic scene, with the local community in tatters over the deaths – which saw neighbours rush to free the trapped family from under a car.

With three kids lying badly injured on the road and the mother of two boys trapped up against a fence, neighbours on Warne Street rushed in to help.

Longtime local resident Brendan Stanley, 50, was standing out the front of his home on Warne St when Donn allegedly lost control of his vehicle and killed the two boys.

He told Daily Mail Australia how in the minutes that followed before paramedics and police arrived, other residents in the neighbourhood sprinted to help – needing a car jack to raise the Holden so that could pull the boys free.

‘I was saying to him, don’t go driving without a licence but he hit a fence and that is when the spoiler must have come off and then he lost control, and he come up on the footpath and it just went “bang”.

‘I was just screaming “Oh no, no, f**k. I couldn’t see anyone standing up, I couldn’t see the kids. I just ran inside and got the phone.’

Mr Stanley called the ambulance, police and then the air helicopter, realising that it was a critical situation.

When he returned there were already locals trying to lift the car off the Sheldon and Shane, and their friend, while their mother Shayleen was pinned against the fence.

‘I ran down and they were trying to lift it and I was on the phone saying we need the police and ambulance here quick,’ Mr Stanley said.

‘One  little fella, I knew he was dead, the other little fella he was pinned up the front. I helped to lift up the car and we freed one little fella, his leg was barely hanging on.

‘I can still see the little boys pinned under the car, we got the car jack and one of the other young blokes who helped out, he did a fantastic job, I take me hat off to him.

‘The first little brother we got out, they took him away, but I knew he was dead.’

Police allege that in the moments after the crash Donn fled the scene.

His girlfriend Glenys Honeysett however did not, rushing to help Mr Stanley and the other men as they tried to rescue the boys.

After driving through the night from his home in Queensland, Mr Shorey and family members visited the crash site late on Wednesday.

Mr Shorey said the boys had been living in NSW before moved up to Queensland with him last year ¿ but wherever they went they were popular kids.

They hugged, cried, laughed, prayed and played some of the boys’ favourite music.

Afterwards he bravely spoke about his two sons, remembering their precious lives that were cut short.

He also hit out at the allegations Doon was doing burnouts and donuts in the street in the moments before the crash, telling hoon drivers: ‘It’s not cool’.

‘That is not cool, all you young fellas out there doing that, it’s not cool, because there are consequences if you do something stupid and wrong,’ Mr Shorey said.

‘Don’t drive around stupid, drive around smart. You want to do donuts go and join a race club and do them there. Don’t do them on the streets.

‘The consequence to me yesterday was me losing my two babies.

‘Sheldon’s only six, he’ll be seven next month on the 12th. Shane was only seven, he was turning eight on Friday… two more days.’

Mr Shorey’s oldest son Mark did not know about the deaths of his brothers until his father told him on Wednesday morning.

The former mine worker said it was the hardest thing he’s ever had to do.

‘When I found out where Mark was… I found out he was in Orange (Base Hospital), I found out he was OK,’ he said.

‘I asked the nurse “Does he know that his brothers passed on?” She said no and I said “I want to be the one to tell him”.

‘I did not know how to do that. That is something you don’t want to do. That was the hardest thing, because he’s already traumatised because he saw what happened to his brothers.

‘He’s in pain, he can hardly walk now, he’s scared.’

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Shorey told Daily Mail Australia of his fond memories with his two boys.

He had last seen his sons on Monday where they told him they loved him and would see him in just a few weeks upon their return to Queensland.

‘I only saw them the day before and they gave me big hugs and cuddles and said: “Dad, we love you, we’ll see you on the 17th”,’ Mr Shorey said.

‘Now I’ve lost my two youngest boys.

‘Sheldon was a little show off, always being like ‘look at me, look at me’, but he’s a little cutey, all the girls loved him.

‘Shane was very sporty and he also liked to be noticed. He knew he was good and he liked people to know as well.

‘I can’t believe it mate. I’m so shattered. It is gut wrenching, it is heartbreaking, it is everything you ever imagine it would be.

‘My kids should be burying me, I shouldn’t have to be burying them, they were my world.’

Mr Shorey plans to attend Dubbo Local Court tomorrow where Jacob Donn is due to appear.

A GoFundMe page has been set up with donations to go to the shattered father for assistance with paying for funerals for his two boys, after he lost his job late last year.
