  • Borton called police about his crimes, referring to himself as ‘Peeping Tom’

A predator who beat a mother to death with a steel mallet so he could strip naked and sexually assault her seriously injured young daughter has been jailed for life.

Joseph William Borton, 31, from Wellington, New Zealand, was sentenced on Friday for the horrific attacks on the 52-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter.

Borton beat the mother so badly that fragments of her skull were found embedded in her brain, the NZ Herald reported.

The court heard how he whispered ‘let’s play’ to the bleeding young girl as he lay naked next to her after the rampage, as she drifted in and out of consciousness.

The High Court at Wellington heard how Borton had met his victims before the frenzied attack.

On April 4, he saw them walk inside a house in Karori, and followed them while brandishing a mallet.

The woman and girl were visiting the home to do laundry for the owners who were away.

Borton then swung the mallet into the back of the 12-year-old’s head, sending her flying, according to the summary of facts, The New Zealand Herald reported.

After trying to break free of Borton’s grip, the girl was struck with the mallet for a second time, knocking her unconscious and causing her skull to cave in.

Her mother ran to help her but was repeatedly struck with the mallet, dying from catastrophic head injuries.

As the young girl watched her mother bleed to death on the floor, Borton undressed and sexually violated her, repeating the words ‘it’s okay’.

He then undressed her bloodied mother while she watched on in horror, according to the summary of facts.

The 31-year-old went home to shower before returning to clean up the blood.

When he returned, he told the 12-year-old she had been in an earthquake and her mother was in hospital.

Borton then lay down naked beside the girl and said ‘Let’s play’.

The girl was so severely injured that she needed surgery to repair her skull.

Her sight and hearing were damaged during the attack and she now has a metal plate inside her skull.

The Wellington man told police he had wanted to ‘incapacitate’ the mother so he could take advantage of her daughter.

Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee said the case was the worst he had ever seen.

A statement from the husband and father of the victims, was read outside court by Detective Constable Hayley Adams.

‘The crimes that occurred to our family were horrific. What happened to my daughter was a horrendous crime but the murder of my wife is numbingly awful,’ he said, Stuff reported.

‘Her death was a great loss to society. Our grief for her loss is always there and deep.

‘The perpetrator is evil. It’s not how we see our society.’

He had previously pleaded guilty to a string of charges over the April attack including murder, sexual assault and theft.

Borton was sentenced to life in prison with a non parole period of 19 years.
