A 16-year-old boy has appeared in court accused of murdering a dog rescue volunteer in a Samurai sword and axe attack.

Ffiona Scourfield, 54, a charity worker, was found dead at her countryside home on Broadmoor Farm in St Clears, Carmarthenshire in Wales.

Police were called to the rural farm where she saved abandoned dogs on Tuesday and Ffiona was already dead when officers and paramedics arrived. 

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in Llanelli Magistrates Court today but spoke only to confirm his name and address.

During the short hearing the court was told Ffiona suffered from wounds inflicted by an axe and a Samauri sword.

The court heard her throat was slashed with the sword.

No pleas were entered during the hearing and the case was adjourned.

The boy was remanded in custody and will appear at Swansea Crown Court on Monday.

Paying tribute, animal rescue colleague Suzanne Syers said: ‘To say the rescue is devastated would be a massive understatement.

‘Suzi was one of our longest standing members who supported the rescue wholeheartedly.

‘Suzi worked tirelessly to make the world a better place for animals & her loss is a huge loss not only to us but to animals worldwide.

‘She spent many weekends braving all kinds of weathers fundraising & raising awareness in the South Wales area, and could always be relied upon to help any dog in need.’

Speaking ahead of today’s hearing, a Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: ‘Dyfed-Powys Police have charged a 16-year-old boy with the murder of Ffiona Scourfield. The 54-year-old lady was found dead at a property near St Clears on Tuesday, March 6.

‘He has been remanded in custody.

‘The local community is thanked for its understanding and support during this investigation.

‘Next of kin continue to be supported by specially trained officers.’
