Welsh derby erupts as Cardiff question Swansea security operation after Ollie Tanner suffers cut leg caused by surging away fans – with bitter rivals drawing 1-1 in south Wales

Cardiff have queried Swansea stadium security after their substitute Ollie Tanner suffered a painful leg injury while helping to salvage a first point of the season for the Bluebirds.

It was one of a number of flashpoints in the latest edition of ‘El Taffico’ which saw Cardiff boss Erol Bulut sent off deep in stoppage time after scuffling with Swansea’s Kyle Naughton.

There were also four yellow cards in three minutes of added time in a stormy end to this Welsh derby, for which Cardiff fans bussed in and out of the game under convoy.

Before the late drama, Tanner was lucky to escape serious injury after he sprinted down the right before pulling back a superb pass for Callum Robinson to covert the equaliser from just inside the area after 79 minutes.

In the celebrations that followed, surging visiting fans caused an advertising board to collapse, hurting Tanner and leaving Cardiff asking questions.

‘You’re looking and saying, ‘Should there potentially be more security around the pitch, so fans can’t come towards the advertising signs?’ said Cardiff coach Omer Riza. ‘That’s a heavy sign that has fallen down, Ollie has a big cut on his leg.’

Swansea boss Luke Williams, mindful of a similar incident at Crystal Palace on Saturday, conceded it is an issue that authorities, and stadium security, will need to look at.

But Williams had other concerns after his side failed to capitalise on an opening goal after 10 minutes from local lad Liam Cullen. It was Cullen’s third goal in as many starts against Cardiff, ramming in the rebound from Ronald’s shot into an empty net.

But the Swans were made to pay for a host of missed chances and, by the time Bulut saw red, Cardiff were good value for a point — although the manager was denied the chance to air his feelings under new EFL rules that forbids managers from talking after being sent off.

‘He is still saying the red was a bit harsh,’ said Riza. ‘He was pulled onto the pitch and their player put his hands on him, which should not happen.’
