Carlos Corberan remains in discussions with Valencia this morning after they agreed to pay West Bromwich Albion his compensation clause.

The struggling La Liga side have offered to pay Albion the £2.8million required to release the 41-year-old manager from his contract at the Hawthorns.

He has also been offered a contract until 2027 with Valencia increasingly confident they can persuade him to move today.

Corberan grew up in Cheste, the Valencia region of Spain, and many of his family remain there. As a goalkeeper he played youth football for Cheste and was on Valencia’s books before opting to go into coaching at the young age of 23.

Corberan has been in demand for the work he has done at Albion under a tight financial budget. He has been on the shortlists for the likes of Southampton and Wolves and was considered by Leeds United last year.

Albion are seventh in the Championship and face Derby County on Boxing Day with the prospect of the first team being under a new coach.

Valencia currently sit joint-bottom of the Spanish top flight following a dismal start to the campaign that has seen them win just two of their first 17 league fixtures.

On Monday the club announced that former Spain international Ruben Baraja had been sacked, having narrowly avoided relegation last season.

At one time one of Spain’s most dominant sides, Los Ches have endured a steep decline over the course of the last decade.

Since Nuno Espirito Santo departed in November 2015, no fewer than 15 different managers have occupied the dugout, including caretakers.

That spell also saw Gary Neville’s infamous foray into management, where he lasted just three months in charge before being sacked after a series of poor results.
