West Bromwich girl gives up presents to raise money

A selfless seven-year-old girl gave up her birthday presents to raise money to feed hungry kids in Africa.

Adorable Saffron Thethi, from West Bromwich, West Midlands, made the decision to ask for donation money instead of presents after watching a video of kids asking for food for Christmas instead of toys.

Posting a video to explain her decision, she said: ‘I want to donate that money that the present costs to children in Africa so they get fed and I want them to be really happy, because in the videos that I watched they’re really sad.

In the clip, Saffron Thethi, 7, explains that she doesn’t want birthday presents this year because she wants the money to go to kids in Africa

‘They didn’t get any food, and because they don’t get anything they want and I’m really lucky ’cause I get everything that I want.’

Her mother, Pav, 34, says that generous Saffron is mature for her age and quite maternal.

So far the family, have raised around £1,500 for the charity Zero Hunger with Langar.

Ms Thethi said: ‘She was going to be seven and her birthday’s around Christmas. I showed her a video on what some children in Malawi were asking for for Christmas – it was just things like rice and food.

‘She said that I’m really lucky because I get whatever I want and they don’t even have anything to eat.

‘We’ve managed to raise about £1,500 in a week – I’m very proud of her and what she’s managed to do.

‘I think it teaches good principles – it’s always good to teach children about what they have and how lucky they are. I try to make a point of it – we often go to feed the homeless on Saturday nights.’

This isn’t her first act of kindness either – the caring little girl has previously given away her toys at Christmas.

Ms Thethi added: ‘I don’t think she understand how much good she’s doing as it is a pretty big deal for a child to give up their presents.

‘But every Christmas she donates some of her toys to the children’s hospitals so I think maybe it’s seems normal to her.’
