A fisherman has made an expensive and embarrassing blunder at the bowser that cost him more than $500.

The angler pulled into a 7-Eleven service station at West Pennant Hills, in Sydney’s Hills District, before going to refuel his car.

He unknowingly mistook his boat’s rod holder for the fuel tank when he began to fill up and didn’t realise his mistake until it was too late.

The fisherman had used 231 litres of fuel worth $536.76, with the petrol having nowhere to go but through the hull and over the service station forecourt.

The embarrassing aftermath of the blunder was caught on camera. 

‘Guys don’t make this mistake ever,’ a man said as he filmed the clean-up.

The clip was posted to a popular fishing page on Facebook where social media users were quick to make light of the situation.

‘And it took 231 litres to realise!’ one commented. 

‘That’s an expensive non fishing day,’ another joked.

‘Shouldn’t have a boat if you don’t know how to fill up the tank,’ was another Aussie’s  blunt response.

‘So many people don’t engage their brains before doing something,’ a fourth person said.
