The first trailer for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story debuted on Wednesday.
The musical, which stars Ansel Elgort as Tony and Rachel Zegler as Maria, looks spectacular with roaring dance numbers and palpable chemistry between the two good-looking leads.
The movie is about a two young people that are associated with rival gangs – the Jets and the Sharks – who fall in love when they are not supposed to.
This film is a new adaptation of the 1957 stage musical which was also turned into a 1961 film that starred Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer.

Also in the film are Ariana DeBose as Anita, David Alvarez as Bernardo, Rita Moreno as Valentina, Mike Faist as Riff.
The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on December 10, 2021.
The trailer starts with Maria alone in her New York City apartment. She looks out her window and starts to sing as hanging laundry moves in the wind outside.
She wants to have fun: ‘This is my first time in New York City, I want to be happy here, I want to make a life, a home,’ she says. She is in a white dress with a red belt with her black hair down and looks radiant, hopeful
At the big dance: Maria heads to a dance and locks eyes with Tony, who is called a ‘gringo’
Not the same background: ‘I have never seen you before, you’re not Puerto Rican,’ she says. Ansel’s Tony says, ‘Is that ok?’ It clearly is not OK as their families are rivals
‘This is my first time in New York City, I want to be happy here, I want to make a life, a home,’ she says.

They have a connection: He is told to keep away from Tony but she retorts she is a ‘grown up now and can think for myself’

Tony is told that he is needed to go to war. The street gangs fire up as the rivals want to rumble. Maria is told that if she goes with Tony ‘no one will ever forgive you.’
Dance scenes take place, kisses are shared, and fighting is near. ‘Life matters even more than love,’ says Rita’s character.
Rita was in the 1961 film West Side Story with the late Wood.

The first teaser trailer from May opened with an early morning shot of New York City, with whistling heard throughout the streets, as we see a wall with a Puerto Rico flag painted on it with ‘This is our place.’
There is also an Irish pub and a boxing gym shown, along with another saying, ‘This is our time’ as we see a gun being dropped on a bar.
The trailer continues with members of two very separate groups meeting in the shadows – teenage gangs known as the Jets and the Sharks.
