A massive house explosion has rocked a western Sydney suburb, with fears residents are trapped inside.
The blast occurred on the second level of a townhouse at Whalan in Sydney’s west, with Fire and Rescue NSW called to Waikanda Crescent just before 1pm.
Emergency services responded to a call about an explosion in a unit.
The call said windows were smashed and people could be heard screaming.
A spokesperson for Fire and Rescue NSW said the house had ‘major damage’, with a neighbouring home also impacted, reported the Sydney Morning Herald.
Fire and Rescue NSW are searching the units for residents, with one person unaccounted for and an elderly woman treated for shock.
Whalan resident Kathleen Morris said the sound of the explosion was massive.
‘I heard a big bang and the whole house shook, everybody came out of their house, wondering what had happened,’ she said.
