A new survey has revealed the top 10 rudest cities in Australia based on certain behaviours – and one state fared worse than others, according to its residents.

Bundaberg in north Queensland was crowned the rudest city in Australia, with a score of 5.81 out of 10. 

The city was followed by Rockhampton in second and Brisbane in third, with the capital city picking up a score of 5.58.

All three cities are in Queensland as are Toowoomba (5th) and Cairns (10th), making for a poor showing by the sunshine state. . 

The damning results listed Adelaide as the fourth rudest city with a score of 5.56. 

Coffs Harbour, on the NSW north coast, was the only city in NSW that managed to make the cut with a score of 5.56. 

Geelong and Melbourne were the only two Victorian cities listed, with the cities ranked seventh and eighth respectively. 

Melbourne scored 5.44 while Canberra ranked as the ninth rudest city according to the survey. 

The nation’s capital scored 5.42 out of 10.

Over 1,500 residents across 22 of some of Australia’s largest cities were surveyed by e-learning platform Preply between July 24 and July 28, 2023. 

The survey also found the most common forms of rude behaviour that were displayed by people.

Being absorbed by a phone in public was ranked the rudest behaviour of all, with Coffs Harbour locals deemed to be caught out in the act the most. 

 he town scored 8.18 out of 10 for this act.

Amy Pritchett, Culture Director of Preply told Daily Mail Australia locals across the holiday hotspot are often seen on their phones whenever they are out on the town.  

‘According to those who live there, Coffs Harbour residents are infamous for being absorbed by their phone while out and about,’ Ms Pritchett said. 

[They are often seen] being on a call while paying for groceries, talking loudly in quiet carriages on trains, and using their speaker phones in public’.

Other common forms of rudeness complained about by those surveyed included not letting people merge in traffic, being noisy in public, and not giving a thank-you wave when driver of a car allows another driver in. 

All three behaviours were found the most in Cairns and Rockhampton. They towns scored 7.50 and 7.12 out of 10 respectively for each behaviour. 

Ms Pritchett said both towns have a bad track record with driving related offences. 

‘Astonishingly, Cairns and Rockhampton received the highest number of complaints for rude driving behaviours,’ Ms Prithcett said. 

‘Specifically, the motorists in these cities are notorious for not slowing down while driving near pedestrians, not letting other people merge in traffic, and not giving a ‘thank you’ wave when another driver lets them merge’. 

People being on the phones in public was reported as the worst form of behaviour displayed among locals in all capital cities and major metropolitan areas.

According to the findings, Newcastle in NSW is home to the least number of offenders in this category, scoring 5.91 out of 10. 

The survey found that locals on the Sunshine Coast rated their town to be the most polite city in Australia. 

Residents of the coastal Queensland region gave the town a score of 4.58 out of 10, 10 being rated as the rudest behaviour.
