White Castle recalls hundreds of boxes of frozen sliders over listeria fears

  • White Castle is recalling 6 packs of frozen mini hamburgers, cheeseburgers and jalapeno cheeseburgers, and 16 packs of hamburgers and cheeseburgers
  • A third-party laboratory found listeria in a sample from one of the company’s manufacturing facilities
  • The products were sold in 23 states and in the grocery section of stores such as Aldi, Sam’s Club and Walmart
  • No one has reported falling ill from consuming the frozen sliders

White Castle has recalled packages of its frozen sliders sold in Walmart and other stores across the US over fears they may be contaminated with listeria.

The bacteria is a common cause of stomach illnesses and can lead to serious complications such as meningoencephalitis, or brain inflammation, and blood poisoning.

A third-party laboratory found listeria in a sample from one of White Castle’s manufacturing facilities, according to a release from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday.

No one from the 23 states where the boxes were sent has reported falling ill yet from consuming the sliders.

White Castle has issued a voluntary recall of five varieties of its frozen sliders after a third-party laboratory found listeria in a sample from one of the company’s manufacturing facilities

Products affected by the recall are six packs each of frozen hamburgers, frozen cheeseburgers and frozen jalapeno cheeseburgers, and 16 packs each of hamburgers and cheeseburgers.

They had best-by dates ranging from August, 4 2020 to August 17, 2020.

‘We aggressively erred on the side of caution,’ White Castle Vice President Jamie Richardson told DailyMail.com.

‘[Between] 95 and 98 percent that was part of the recall never exited warehouses.’

Richardson said that no products reached the East Coast and that stores affected are in the western and southwestern US.

Since the problem was detected, no White Castle products have been shipped from that facility to stores.

White Castle says it is conducting intensive cleaning at the plant and increasing its food safety and manufacturing guidelines.

Customers are urged not to consume the products and either throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

Anyone with questions has been asked to call White Castle at (800) 843-2728.

White Castle frozen products are sold in stores such as 7-Eleven, Aldi, Family Dollar, Rite Aid, Sam’s Club and Walmart.

Listeriosis is a serious infection that is typically caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

The most common foods are unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses, vegetables and meat products such as deli meat.

Symptoms usually begin one to four weeks after exposure and include headache, loss of confusion, muscle aches and fever.

Pregnant women who are infected can go into premature delivery, have a stillbirth or suffer a miscarriage.

About 1,600 people fall ill with the infection every year in the US and about 260 people die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This is the second time this month that grocery store products have been recalled over listeria fears.

Last week, 24 ready-to-eat sushi trays, salads and spring rolls made by Fuji Food Products were recalled in 31 states after the FDA found evidence they may be contaminated with the bacteria.
