The Chicago White Sox announced that relief pitcher Liam Hendriks will officially be making his return to the active roster on Monday after his battle with cancer.

While undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hendriks missed Spring Training as well as the first two months of the MLB season.

But ever since he revealed that he was cancer-free in early April, and confirmed again later that month that he was in remission, Hendriks has been regaining his strength to try and get back to the field.

‘As of now I have a clean bill of health,’ Hendriks said earlier this month. ‘I’m currently in remission.’

‘As soon as I found out the regular treatment timelines, I thought, “OK, how can I beat it?”‘ he said back in May. ‘It was those days on the couch, not being able to move much [after chemo], those were the days you needed to dig deep and find that positive mental attitude.’

Hendriks revealed his diagnosis back on January 9, marking just short of six months of absence from the revelation.

To celebrate his return, the White Sox posted a video message on their social media accounts with players and coaches welcoming him back to the team.

Hendriks posted a video on Instagram with the caption ‘See you soon Southside’ alongside Monday’s date, 5-29.

As a team, the White Sox have been struggling – with the pitching staff combining for a 4.83 ERA. It’s left Chicago with a 22-33 record and six games behind the AL Central leading Minnesota Twins.

Hendriks is in the last season of his three-year, $54m deal with Chicago – with the team holding a $15m club option for next year.

Chicago hosts the Los Angeles Angels on Monday evening.
