White Sox ripped over embarrassing error and are even mocked by announcer as Chicago approaches loss record

One play rarely defines a season for a sports team, but on Tuesday, the Chicago White Sox may have had one play symbolize how truly catastrophic their campaign has been in 2024.

In the bottom of the second inning in their game against the Baltimore Orioles, former White Sox star Eloy Jimenez hit a routine pop fly against the Southsiders.

Multiple players tried tracking the ball down – including third baseman Miguel Vargas and left fielder Andrew Benintendi.

Vargas lunged for the ball and crashed into Benintendi – causing the ball to fall between them and roll away.

Benintendi had to pick the ball up to try and make a play but did not prevent the run from scoring.

Orioles announcer Kevin Brown was left stunned as he called the situation, commenting, ‘Oh no! Oh my goodness. The White Sox have just gone full White Sox.’

Adding insult to actual injury, Vargas was removed from the game after suffering an abrasion on his right eye.

Fans on social media piled on in the misery – wondering just exactly how a team could be this bad.

One user on Twitter wrote, ‘every day I say “it can’t get any worse”…and somehow it does.’

Another said, ‘The 2024 White Sox have to got 8-14 the rest of the season to avoid being the worst baseball team in the Modern Era. So that’ll be fun.’

‘this team genuinely does not deserve to have 31 wins. they are overachieving imo,’ wrote another user.’

‘Jerry Reinsdorf wants the taxpayers of Chicago to give him $1 billion dollars for a new stadium for this baseball team,’ read another post.

‘Friends of mine who are White Sox fans, if you haven’t already, please stop watching this team this season for the sake of your mental health. This cannot be good for it,’ said another user.

Chicago has only racked up four wins since the All-Star break and are on pace for true mediocrity, having already been eliminated from the playoffs.

The White Sox are just eleven losses away from having the most losses in the modern era of Major League Baseball.

Currently, the record is held by the 1962 New York Mets – who went 40-120 in their debut season.
