A seaplane has crashed in the Whitsundays with the six passengers on board forced to free themselves from the sinking aircraft.

The plane plummeted into waters near Hamilton Island just before 1pm on Wednesday.

The six people on board managed to free themselves from the aircraft and swim to shore.

The passengers were assessed by Queensland paramedics on scene.

No one was seriously injured in the crash.
