England sealed top spot in the Euro 2024 group with a forgettable goalless draw against Slovenia on Tuesday night.

The result saw Gareth Southgate’s side land on favourable half of the draw, avoiding hosts Germany, France, Spain and Portugal.

The Three Lions have been made to wait to discover their last-16 opponents due to Group C winners facing one of the four best third placed teams in the competition.

England will face the third place finishers from either Group D or Group E.

The Netherlands were confirmed as the third placed team in Group D on Tuesday.

Ronald Koeman’s side slipped to third in their group after losing 3-2 to surprise group winners Austria, while France finished second after a 1-1 draw against Poland.

The Dutch national team are England’s likeliest opponents, but they could also face one of the four teams from Group E.

Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine are all vying to qualify from the group, with the quartet heading into their final group matches on three points.

Group E will conclude on Wednesday afternoon, but England will have to wait for the final round matches to finish in the evening to discover their opponents as events in Group F could have a major impact.

Should Czechia beat Turkey or Georgia earn a stunning upset win over Portugal, Hungary would be eliminated from the competition.

Hungary are currently the lowest ranked of the third placed teams after finishing with two points in Group A.

With Portugal and Turkey already on six and three points in Group F, a win for either Czechia or Georgia would see Hungary’s points total eclipsed by the nation who eventually finish third.

In this event, England would face the third place team in Group E, rather than the Netherlands.
